The Man in the Hat -
Walking Away from the Fireworks

Everyone else is watching. He is leaving.

A figure in a wide-brimmed hat strides through the foreground, silhouetted against an eruption of fireworks – white sparks cascading across a sky that has turned an impossible red and blue. His reflection ripples in the wet ground beneath him. Another figure stands to the left, also dark, also anonymous. The harbour, the boats, the trees – all reduced to shadow.

The fireworks are spectacular. The man is indifferent. And that indifference is what makes the image compelling. While the sky performs its grand finale, he moves through it as through weather – purposeful, unhurried, already elsewhere in his mind.

It is an image about the private moment within the public spectacle. About the person who does not look up.

The sky is on fire. He has somewhere to be.
